Printable medium sudoku: what the grids need

A Medium grid needs at least one hidden single or pointing pair or triple. A hidden single is a digit that fits in only one cell of a row, column or box; a pointing pair is a digit whose candidates in a box share one row or column, which removes it from the rest of that line.

On paper, scan by digit. Take the 1s, then the 2s, and for each box ask where that digit could go. Lightly shading or dotting the ruled-out cells helps you see the one that is left. When a digit is confined to one line in a box, a small mark in the margin is enough to remember the pointing pair.

Medium sheets suit regular solvers and are a good second step in a classroom once pupils can place naked singles. Four per page leaves room for a few corner notes.

For a journey, twelve Medium grids at four per page fill three sheets. Put the answer pages somewhere you will not glance at them.

If a Medium grid stalls, the usual cause is a missed hidden single. Go back through the digits 1 to 9 one at a time and check every box for each before looking for anything cleverer.
