How to play the colors word search
- Twelve color names are hidden in straight lines: across, down or diagonal, in either direction.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- Found words get a coloured band of their own, which rather suits this theme.
Colors word search strategy
Color names are short, averaging just over five letters, and many are made from the commonest letters of all. Pick your targets in this order, and you will rarely need a hint.
Q, Z, J and K first
TURQUOISE has the only Q. AZURE and BRONZE have the only Zs, JADE the only J, and KHAKI two Ks. PINK and BLACK add a K each. Any of these letters in the grid is a strong lead, because the fill almost never produces them.
Then V and the doubles
V turns up in VIOLET, IVORY, LAVENDER, MAUVE, NAVY and OLIVE. For doubles, look for the LL in YELLOW, the EE in GREEN, the PP in COPPER and the OO in MAROON. A doubled letter looks the same from both ends, which helps with backwards words.
Short names last
RED and TAN are the hardest, and sixteen four-letter names, BLUE, PINK, GRAY, GOLD, RUBY, TEAL, AQUA, CYAN, JADE, LIME, MINT, RUST, PLUM, NAVY, ROSE and SAND, are close behind. Once the long words are banded, sweep row by row for the first letter. The CY of CYAN and the AQ of AQUA are unusual pairs worth hunting directly.
Words in the colors word search
The colors list has 57 names. The shortest are RED and TAN; the longest are TURQUOISE and CHOCOLATE at nine letters, followed by LAVENDER, BURGUNDY and CHARCOAL. Most names have four or five letters, which makes this one of the more compact themes and a fair choice for a 10×10.
It starts with the rainbow, RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO and VIOLET, then the everyday PINK, PURPLE, BROWN, BLACK, WHITE and GRAY. After that come the shades by family: reds (CRIMSON, SCARLET, RUBY, MAROON, BURGUNDY, MAGENTA), blues (NAVY, TEAL, TURQUOISE, AQUA, CYAN, AZURE, COBALT), greens (EMERALD, JADE, OLIVE, LIME, MINT), neutrals (BEIGE, TAN, KHAKI, CREAM, IVORY, CHARCOAL, SLATE) and the metals, SILVER, GOLD, BRONZE and COPPER.
Many color names borrow from other things: PEACH, PLUM, SALMON, CORAL, ROSE, PEARL, SAND, RUST, AMBER, MUSTARD and CHOCOLATE. The list uses American spelling, GRAY rather than grey, as the page name does.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Colors stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes colors sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The colors grid reads clearly on a small phone, and the colour-blind setting draws every second band dotted so found words stay easy to tell apart. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
