How to play the sports word search
- Twelve sports words are hidden in straight lines: across, down or diagonal, in either direction.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- Find all twelve to stop the clock; your best sports time is kept in this browser.
Sports word search strategy
The sports list has two big families that compete for the same letters, and knowing them saves a lot of staring.
The BALL family
Seven sports end in BALL: FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HANDBALL and NETBALL. When one of them is in your list, the double L is the anchor. Find the LL, see which way the B lies, then read the far end of the word to tell which ball game it is. VOLLEYBALL has two LL pairs, which makes it the easiest of the lot.
The ING family
Seventeen activities end in ING, from BOXING and DIVING to WRESTLING and SLEDDING. ING is a poor anchor, because I, N and G are common fill letters. Use the start of the word instead, or a doubled letter: the II in SKIING is rare anywhere, and SWIMMING, RUNNING and SLEDDING have MM, NN and DD.
Rare letters and a palindrome
SQUASH has the only Q, JUDO the only J and BOXING the only X, so any of those letters in the grid is a strong lead. KAYAK reads the same in both directions, so once you find it there is no need to work out which way it runs.
Words in the sports word search
About three quarters of the 66 sports words are the sports themselves: team games such as RUGBY, HOCKEY, LACROSSE and NETBALL, and individual ones such as ARCHERY, FENCING, CURLING, DARTS and TRIATHLON. Then come the people and objects (GOAL, TEAM, COACH, REFEREE, WHISTLE, MEDAL, TROPHY, HELMET, RACKET, GLOVE) and the places they meet: STADIUM, ARENA, PITCH, COURT, TRACK and FIELD.
Lengths run from four letters (GOLF, JUDO, POLO, GOAL, TEAM) to ten (BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, GYMNASTICS, SKATEBOARD), with most words between five and eight. There are no three-letter words, so even the shortest find has four letters to latch onto.
Some spellings trip people up. LACROSSE has a double S near the end, BADMINTON has a single D, and REFEREE has three Es. SOCCER and FOOTBALL are both on the list, so the grid works whichever word you grew up with. KAYAK and CANOE are both here too, as are SPRINT, MARATHON, HURDLES and RELAY from the running track.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Sports stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes sports sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The sports grid works as well on a phone at the side of the pitch as on a desktop, with tap-to-select for fingers and the arrow keys for the keyboard. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
