How to play the school word search
- Twelve school words are hidden in straight lines, in any of eight directions.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- On a projector, the 15×15 grid with 18 words makes a good whole-class puzzle.
School word search strategy
School words have a helpful mix of rare letters and doubled letters, and the list is long on words that most players can spell without looking. Use the letters before you start reading rows: they find most of a grid in the first few minutes.
Q, Z and X first
QUIZ is the only word with a Q or a Z, and it fills just four cells, so find the Q and you have it. EXAM and TEXTBOOK carry the only Xs. J belongs to JANITOR and PROJECT, and K runs through BOOK, NOTEBOOK, DESK, CHALK, MARKER, LOCKER and BACKPACK.
The double S words
CLASS, LESSON, RECESS, COMPASS, SCISSORS, CLASSROOM, ESSAY and ASSIGNMENT all have a double S, and SCISSORS has two. An SS pair is a good anchor, but with several of these words in play, check the letters around it before you drag.
Nested words
PEN sits inside PENCIL, CLASS inside CLASSROOM, and BOOK inside NOTEBOOK and TEXTBOOK. The generator only ever uses one word from each nest, so a short word you spot inside a longer list word is not a separate find. The three-letter words GYM, BUS and ART are best left for a final row-by-row sweep.
Words in the school word search
The school list has 72 words, from PEN, GYM, BUS and ART to four ten-letter words: DICTIONARY, PROTRACTOR, PLAYGROUND and ASSIGNMENT. Lengths spread evenly between four and eight letters, which suits mixed-ability groups.
It covers the whole day. There is the classroom kit (DESK, BOARD, CHALK, MARKER, ERASER, PENCIL, CRAYON, BINDER, RULER, COMPASS, PROTRACTOR, STAPLER), the subjects (MATH, READING, WRITING, SPELLING, SCIENCE, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ART, MUSIC, DRAMA), the people (TEACHER, STUDENT, PUPIL, PRINCIPAL, COUNSELOR, NURSE, JANITOR) and the places beyond the classroom: LIBRARY, CAFETERIA, GYM, HALLWAY, PLAYGROUND, LOCKER and the BUS. The year is marked by TEST, EXAM, GRADE, REPORT, SEMESTER, GRADUATE and DIPLOMA.
The vocabulary leans American, with RECESS, CAFETERIA, PRINCIPAL, ERASER, SEMESTER and COUNSELOR, but PUPIL sits beside STUDENT. SCISSORS and COMPASS are often misspelled, which makes them good words to practise.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and School stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes school sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The school grid works on classroom tablets and interactive boards as well as phones, and it can be played entirely with the arrow keys and Space. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
