How to play the vegetables word search
- Twelve vegetables hide in straight lines, in any of eight directions.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- Both names for one vegetable can turn up in the same grid, so find each separately.
Vegetables word search strategy
The vegetables list has plenty of letters that the fill rarely makes, a lot of doubled letters, and a few traps where one word hides inside another. Work in this order and most grids fall quickly.
Rare letters first
ZUCCHINI has the only Z, as well as a double C. JICAMA has the only J and SQUASH the only Q. K appears in KALE, LEEK, OKRA, ROCKET, KOHLRABI, ARTICHOKE and PUMPKIN, and V only in CHIVE and ENDIVE. Find the rare letter first, then check its eight neighbours for the next letter of the word.
Doubles
The list is full of them: CARROT, BROCCOLI, LETTUCE, CABBAGE, SHALLOT, PEPPER, EGGPLANT, COURGETTE, FENNEL, MUSHROOM and WATERCRESS each have a pair, and BEETROOT has two, EE and OO. A doubled letter is rare in fill and looks the same from both ends.
Words inside words
BEET is inside BEETROOT, RADISH inside HORSERADISH, CORN inside SWEETCORN and CRESS inside WATERCRESS. Only one of each pair is ever in a grid, so a short word you spot inside a longer list word is not a separate find. YAM and PEA, the two three-letter vegetables, are best left for a final row-by-row sweep.
Words in the vegetables word search
The vegetables list has 54 words, from YAM and PEA to CAULIFLOWER and HORSERADISH at eleven letters and WATERCRESS at ten. Six-letter words are the most common: CARROT, POTATO, TOMATO, GARLIC, CELERY, RADISH, TURNIP, SQUASH and FENNEL.
Roots and bulbs lead: CARROT, POTATO, ONION, GARLIC, LEEK, SHALLOT, BEET, RADISH, TURNIP, PARSNIP, YAM and GINGER. Then the greens (CABBAGE, KALE, LETTUCE, SPINACH, CHARD, CRESS), the flower heads and stalks (BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, ARTICHOKE, ASPARAGUS, CELERY, FENNEL), the squash family (PUMPKIN, SQUASH, ZUCCHINI, CUCUMBER) and the pods and seeds (PEA, BEAN, LENTIL, OKRA, EDAMAME, CORN).
The list deliberately covers both sides of the Atlantic. ZUCCHINI and COURGETTE, EGGPLANT and AUBERGINE, ARUGULA and ROCKET, RUTABAGA and SWEDE are pairs that name the same vegetable, and both halves can appear in one grid. BEET and BEETROOT are the exception: one sits inside the other, so they never do.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Vegetables stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes vegetables sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The vegetables grid fits a phone screen at the default size, and every letter can be reached with the arrow keys and chosen with Space or Enter. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
