How to play the weather word search
- Twelve weather words hide in straight lines, in any of eight directions.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- The two eleven-letter words appear only on 12×12 grids and larger.
Weather word search strategy
The weather list is built around a few short roots, SUN, RAIN and SNOW, that also start longer words. Knowing how the generator treats them saves time, and a few rare letters do the rest.
Roots and their families
SUN sits inside SUNSHINE, SUNRISE and SUNSET; RAIN inside RAINBOW and RAINCOAT; SNOW inside SNOWFLAKE and SNOWMAN. No chosen word may sit inside another, so a grid with SUNSET in its list never has SUN on its own, though it can have SUNRISE too. When you find S-U-N, read on: the next letters tell you which word it is.
The Zs are gifts
BREEZE, DRIZZLE and BLIZZARD have the only Zs, two of them with a double Z. Z is the rarest fill letter of all, so a ZZ pair almost certainly belongs to one of them. SNOWFLAKE has the only K, and OVERCAST and AVALANCHE the only Vs.
Seven tiny words
SUN, FOG, DEW, ICE, HOT, DRY and WET have three letters each, more than most themes, and HOT, DRY and WET look like fill. Find the long words first, THERMOMETER, TEMPERATURE, HURRICANE and BAROMETER, and sweep for the short ones row by row at the end.
Words in the weather word search
The weather list is one of the shorter ones, 61 words, but it has a wide spread of lengths: seven words of three letters and two of eleven, THERMOMETER and TEMPERATURE. Those two need a 12×12 or larger grid; on a 10×10 the generator leaves them out.
The words fall into clear groups. What falls from the sky: RAIN, SNOW, HAIL, SLEET, DRIZZLE, SHOWER, DOWNPOUR. What blows: WIND, BREEZE, GALE. The big storms: THUNDER, LIGHTNING, TORNADO, BLIZZARD, MONSOON and HURRICANE, with CYCLONE and TYPHOON, which are regional names for the same kind of storm. How it feels: HEAT, COLD, WARM, COOL, HUMID, DRY, WET. Then the seasons, with AUTUMN rather than fall, and the tools of the trade: FORECAST, BAROMETER, THERMOMETER, CELSIUS and DEGREE.
The list ends with what you need outside, UMBRELLA, RAINCOAT and BOOTS, and what you might find there: a PUDDLE, an ICICLE, a SNOWMAN.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Weather stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes weather sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The weather grid fits a phone screen at the default size, and larger grids scroll inside the board and are played by tapping the first and last letter. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
